Last week at the Willy St/UW Madison World Music Fest, we saw bands like Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Mali's Khaira Arby, Cimarron (Colombia), Joan Soriano (Batchata band) sweep madisonians off their feet with their infectious rhythms and grooves, that brought the D back to dance in Madison. We follow up on Panafrica (WORT 89.9) this saturday (10/2) with Congo to Cuba Rumba Soukous Ndombolo as part of our series on exploring and celebrating the African music legacy. Long before "Salsa" emerge as a genre, Cubans played Son, Son montuno, Guaracha, mambo and other styles with strong African roots dating back to slavery.

Women of Africa Tribute
On this Panafrica show, we celebrate the oldest continent for mankind at 50 years with a tribute to the women of Africa. About 17 African countries gained independence in 1960 through a hard fought struggle for liberation. Often left out of the narrative is the integral role women played in this liberation movement across the continent. We explore and dissect the historical roles of women and their current state as Africa paradoxically turns 50.
Angelique Kidjo on Panafrica Show
There is simply no musician quite like Angélique Kidjo. With joy and passion Angelique embodies the spirit of Africa. Through her music, life and exuberant commitment to advocacy she exemplifies unity, peace and diversity. One of the true stars of world music, she has spread her rhythmic Afro-fusion to the far reaches of the globe, cross-pollinating the West African traditions of her childhood in Benin with elements of R&B, jazz, and funk, as well as influences from Europe and Latin America. Kidjo commands the stage with her fun-loving personality and electrifying charisma, and ‘her voice has never sounded more expressive or exquisitely nuanced’ (The Times, London). This Grammy Award winning singer crosses musical boundaries and, in doing so, seeks to unite different world cultures through her music. Angélique Kidjo is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has delivered countless speeches on the issues children and women face in her native land and elsewhere.
African Jazz Special
On this show we continue exploring & celebrating the African muscal legacy with an African Jazz special featuring music from across Africa. Jazz music with its blue notes, improvisations and polyrythms dates back to west african slaves and developed as a genre by African Americans in the south. A new African Jazz emerges in the confluence of African-American jazz and various African traditional musical styles, which spices up the genre and makes it irresistible. From the indestructible township beats of south africa, rumba/soukous in congo, kora in mali, highlife and juju music in Ghana/Nigeria, to the sweet beats of bembeya jazz, orchestra baobab, and super rail band of Guinea, Senegal and Mali. We'll bring you your favourite tunes from the '50s to present.

Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars and Khaira Arby on PanAfrica show
On this show our studio guests will be Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars (SLRAS) and a live interview with Mali's reigning queen of song, Khaira Arby dubbed the "Timbuktu Desert Blues Diva." SLRAS, a group of musicians who escaped the horrific violence of Sierra Leone's civil war, and formed a band in a refugee camp in Guinea to keep their spirits up and their hopes alive. Now an international musical sensation, their journey exemplifies the universal healing power of music.Their latest album Rise and shine has received rave reviews.
Khaira Arby has been writing and singing in the indigenous languages of her Sahara Desert region (Songhai, Tamaschek, Bambara, Arabic) for decades. On her first tour in North America, Khaira Arby debut CD (Timbuktu Tarab) gives Americans their first glimpse of a Desert rose. Her robust voice, roiling grooves and direct lyrics, often addressing sensitive issues, have made her a legend in her own time. Her greatest social impact in her native country of Mali and beyond has been her advocacy for women.
Music from the African Islands
We take a musical and cultural journey across the African Islands of Zanzibar, Comoros, Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, Sao Tome & Principe, and Cape Verde. These islands located in continental shelf of the African geographical plate have for hundreds of years serve as the junction of Asian, European, Middle Eastern, American and Oceanic cultures.
From Zanzibar and Comoros, we feature Taarab music that arose from the confluence of Arab, Indian, and african cultures. In Zanzibar, we check in on Bi Kidude, the 100 year old reigning queen of Taarab, who continues to challenge our perception of age, role of women in Islam vis-a vis drinking, smoking, dance, flirt and drumming. In Mauritius and Reunion, we bring traditional Sega music and its musical offsprings Seggae (Sega and Reggae) and Zeggae (Sega and Zouk). Madagascar, home to the worlds most endemic species also lies at the musical interphase of African, Austronesian, Arabs, Indians, Asian, European, and American Influences. Malagasy music is highly melodic with predominance of chordophone, which are present in the high tempo and energetic coastal dance styles of salegy and tsapika.
Up next is the beautiful Atlantic Ocean islands of Sao Tome & Principe, where we explore the musical styles of Tchiloli and Danca Congo, that are based on the ancient african traditions of story telling and music. We learn the Puita dance, a sensual erotic dance done traditionally to revere the dead in Sao Tome & Principe. Then we head onto our final destination, Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), an Atlantic ocean island on the west coast of Africa. In Cabo Verde, we feature the traditional and contemporary musical styles of Morna, Funana, and Batuque.

Calypso to Soccer, The Evolution
This saturday (Dec.18th) on Panafrica, we kicked off the holiday season with calypso to soca musical and cultural journey across the Island of Trinidad & Tobago. The archipelagic state lies northeast of Venezuela and south of Grenada, sharing maritime boundaries with Barbados and Guyana. The modern music history of Trinidad &Tobago reflects the diverse African ethnic groups that constitute the current culture, with European, Asian (Indian & Chinese), America, as well as middle eastern layers of influences. From the diverse African heritage emerged a dominant Creole and Canboulay musical culture, that gave birth to Calypso from west african kaiso. Canboulay, characterized by stick fighting and percussion had arise as a parallel celebration to French carnival.
Banned in 1880 in response to Canboulay riots, the stick fighting & percussion of Canboulay gradually morphed into the steel pans that are now a major part of the island's music. First recordings of Calypso dates back to 1912 by Lovey's String band but artists who popularized the genre include Lord kitchener, Attila the Hun, Lord Invader, Mighty Sparrow, Black Stalin, and Mighty Spoiler.
Calypso then metamorphosed to soca with popular recordings from Lord Shorty (Indrani), infusing African and Indian chutney beats from the Uttar Pradesh region of India. Soca has evolved into blend of musical styles including rapso (rap+soca), Raggasoca (jamaican dancehall +soca), Chutney soca (soca with more chutney), Parang soca (spanish twist), Steelband soca, Rockso (American rock +soca), Bouyon soca (dominican soca), and Groovy soca (more R&B'ish melodic form).
