On WORT 89.9 FM PANAFRICA: Music from Senegal and Gambia

On WORT 89.9 FM Panafrica show (http://www.wort-fm.org/listen.php) this Saturday, October 29th, 2-4 PM CST, we continue our World is Africa tour with a musical and cultural  journey across the West African countries of Senegal and The Gambia. The two countries have shared cultural and historical backgrounds that predates the Mali and Ghana empires. The music of both countries is drawn from the Serer, Mandika, Wolof, Susu, Fula, Toucouleur, Jola (Diola), Soninke, and other ethnic groups in the region.

The music of Senegal is diverse and popular across Africa, with Mbalax being the predominant sound popularized by International music sensation Youssou Ndour. The traditional roots of Senegalese music were strongly nurtured by the late Leopold Senghor, the country's first president and his policy of negritude. From Sundioulou Cissoko, Orchestra Baobab, Super Diamano, Toure Kunda, Baaba Maal, Omar Pene, Cheik Lo, DJ Awadi, Thione Seck, Viviane Ndour, Coumba Gawlo Seck, Kine Lam, Fatou Guewel, Daby Balde, Daara J, Doudou Ndiaye Rose to Ishmael Lo, Senegal has produced an amazing repertoire of musicians and bands that reflects the diverse musical styles across Africa and the Diaspora.

The music of the Gambia is closely linked with its large neighbor , Senegal. The griots (Jalis or Jelis) from Mandika ethnicity are common throughout the country, a legacy of the early mande empire. The Jalis play kora, Ngoni, Kameli Ngoni, and Balafon. Notable Jali artists include Amadu Bansang Jorbateh (Grand Father of Mali's Toumani Diabate),Foday Musa Susu, Alhaji Papa Susu, Jaliba Kuyateh, Sona Jorbateh, etc. The Super Eagles Band was a big part of the music scene and later becoming Ifang Bondi, migrating from its jazz, funk and afro-cuban rythms to more traditional tunes. Former Ifang Bondi band member Juldeh Camara has had successful solo career.

  2. The music of Senegal was popularized by Youssou Ndour across Africa. I love how African music have a sense of nationalism, pride, and profound message. Most theme reflects African politics, religion, and way of life. Very interesting genre of music.
