Tune into this Saturday, April 9th, 2-4 PM CST (http://www.wort-fm.org/ listen.php) for another edition of PANAFRICA on WORT 89.9 FM featuring Afro-Cuban and Cumbia music from Colombia. Long before "Salsa" emerge as a genre, Cubans played Son, Son montuno, Guaracha, mambo and other styles with strong African roots dating back to slavery. The present African rumba emerges at that interphase and combines layers of traditional African music with elements of the various musical styles of Cuba and latin America such as Bachata, Cha Cha, Coumbia, etc.
Move over salsa and merengue - cumbia is the most popular music in Latin America. Cumbia is believed to be a variant of Guinean Cumbe music and began in Colombia as courtship dance among African slave populations. Today, cumbia is played from the borderlands of Texas down the spine of the Andes to the tip of Tierra del Fuego. Everywhere it went, it transformed itself, adapting to its new environment. In Peru, it mixed with psychedelic guitar effects and Andean sounds to become chicha. In Argentina, it became the expression of a new generation of restless youth in the burgeoning slums of Buenos Aires. And in Mexico, it has become so instilled in the local culture that some have forgotten that it came from Colombia in the first place.
